Introduction
Dinh Van, a distinguished name in the world of fine jewelry, is celebrated for its unique blend of simplicity and sophistication. Since its creation, Dinh Van has been associated with innovation and modernity, making pieces that go beyond traditional jewellery design, making them timeless.
Dinh Van was founded in 1965 by Jean Dinh Van, a visionary jeweller who spent eight years working for the renowned Maison Cartier (from 1950 to 1958). With a strong interest in minimalist design and a desire to move away from conventional jewelry aesthetics, Jean Dinh Van opened his own atelier in Paris. In the same year, he created the "Deux Perles" ring ("Two Pearls" ring, in English) for Pierre Cardin, which marked his first success in jewelry. In 1967, he was selected as one of the four best French jewellers to exhibit his creations at the Universal Exhibition in Montréal. The first outlet was the Publicis Drugstore on the Champs Elysées in Paris. In the 1980s, the brand went international, opening boutiques in New York, Geneva and Brussels. In 2003, an exhibition was dedicated to Jean Dinh Van at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the famous ‘Deux Perles’ ring entered the personal gallery of contemporary jewellery.
Jean Dinh Van was born in France in 1927 to a Vietnamese father and a French mother. He graduated from the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and went on to perfect his art at Cartier, just like his father before him. Inspired by his experiences and multicultural heritage, Jean Dinh Van has sought to create jewellery that is both elegant and practical. He draws inspiration from the everyday objects that surround him, and his discreet yet luxurious jewellery can be worn every day, for any occasion. His designs, characterised by clean lines and geometric shapes, quickly won acclaim and made him a pioneer of contemporary jewellery. He signed a distribution agreement with Cartier, making him one of the few designers to have co-signed original pieces. Jean Dinh Van has met many people along the way, including Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Jean Schlumberger and César. He died on 3 July 2022. Today, he remains a great and talented jeweller in the world of luxury, and his creations are recognised the world over.
