Introduction
The North Face is a well-known brand in outdoor apparel and equipment, associated with adventure, durability, and innovative technology. Since its founding, The North Face has provided gear designed to meet challenging conditions and support exploration.
The North Face was founded in 1966 by a young mountaineer, Douglas Tompkins, and Susie Tompkins Buell in San Francisco, California, with the aim of making outdoor activities accessible. The modest San Francisco shop soon became a cultural crossroads, hosting concerts, serving as a meeting place for the Beat Generation and an essential stop-off point for America's top climbers on their way back from Yosemite. The brand gradually gained recognition.
Backpacking was born in 1969. Designed as a practical solution for carrying bulky equipment, the Ruthsack was one of the first internally-structured rucksacks ever invented. Lightweight and functional, this backpack contributed to making hiking more accessible. In 1977, GORE-TEX® products, designed to keep skiers warm, joined The North Face's outerwear collection, offering waterproof and breathable clothing for skiers in all weather. The brand went international around the 1980s. The Mountain jacket and trousers introduced GORE-TEX® protection, aimed at providing freedom of movement and comfort for various outdoor activities. In 1989, The North Face co-founded The Conservation Alliance alongside REI, Patagonia, and Kelty, a group dedicated to supporting organizations working to preserve North America's remaining wilderness areas. In the 90s, the brand launched popular products such as the Nuptse jacket, named after a mountain 1km south-west of Everest and considered to be the western peak of this legendary mountaineering destination, and the Himalayan suit, designed for high-altitude expeditions. It has accompanied hundreds of explorers on expeditions to the highest and most icy regions of the globe. Deeply rooted in the freeskiing community (freestyle and freeride), The North Face signed an eight-year contract in 2011 as a founding partner of U.S. Freeskiing and official supplier to the U.S. Freeski Team. Today, the brand is involved in advancing technology and sustainable innovation.
The North Face logo, featuring a stylized representation of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, reflects the brand's deep connection to nature and adventure. The name The North Face was chosen to represent the coldest and most demanding face of this mountain.
